On the eve of the 2022-2023 academic year, we propose to find out in detail when schoolchildren will have holidays in the coming winter in the quarter and trimester education systems, as well as how long the winter holidays will last.

Who decides the dates?

Important! The Department of Education announces the optimal vacation dates, but each educational institution has the right to set its own work schedule, taking into account the characteristics of the program, the climatic conditions of the region and other factors.

When determining the duration of the period of study and rest, school administrations must take into account a number of restrictions:

    1. Rest periods should always start on Monday.
    2. The total number of rest days for schoolchildren (excluding summer holidays) must be at least 30 days.
    3. Duration of autumn and spring holidays cannot be less than 7 days.
    4. Minimum duration of winter vacation is 14 days.
    5. Summer vacation should be at least 2 months.

    The autonomy of schools in determining vacation time is enshrined in Order No. 1015 of the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as in sanitary and epidemiological standards. In the event of force majeure circumstances requiring the transfer of the previously established work schedulevacation period, the school administration must notify all participants in the educational process of the changes in advance. Moreover, the shift of the rest period for schoolchildren is allowed no more than 2 weeks.

    In practice, such uncertainty leads to the fact that rest periods in different educational institutions do not coincide. Moreover, the work schedules of schools and out-of-school institutions do not match, which is why children simply cannot rest and recover properly.

    Christmas holidays for schools

    For both the quarter and semester systems, the start date of the long rest period will be fixed - students will go to the winter holidays in the 2022-2023 academic year from Monday, December 26, 2023. The New Year holiday will last until January 8, 2023.

    Thus, the last school day of 2023 for 5-day schools will be Friday 23 December, and for schools with 6 days - Saturday 24 December.

    The first school day of 2023 will be Monday, January 9th. It will also be the first working day for all those working on the classic 5-day schedule.

    Second winter school break

    The so-called February holidays will be held in many schools from 13 to 19 (or from 20 to 26) February 2023:

    • under the quarter system, they will only affect first-graders;
    • with trimester - all students.

    Winter holidays at universities

    As for schools, universities are recommended to start the winter holidays of the 2022-2023 academic year from Monday 26 December. But,even if the universities agree to the proposed dates, only students who pass the session on time will be able to go on vacation so early. Since teachers continue to work during vacation periods (in particular, in December, teachers will work until 12/31/22), retake dates can also be scheduled for the last week of the outgoing year.

    One-time vacation

    Today, the system allows schools to decide when to send students on vacation. On the one hand, this approach allows you to vary the schedule of schools, taking into account the peculiarities of the educational process, but on the other hand, it brings a lot of inconvenience to parents and the children themselves.

    The most common complaints about such difficulties:

    1. unable to predict holiday dates;
    2. often the dates announced at the beginning of the school year are shifted;
    3. vacations for children who study in different schools do not coincide, which creates certain problems in families.

    For more than one year, discussions have been underway on the advisability of introducing the so-called one-time vacations - a single schedule for all educational institutions.
