The basis of the future harvest of eggplant lies in the choice of high-quality seed material, the creation of favorable conditions for growing seedlings, the correct choice of sowing dates, transplanting into the ground or greenhouse. Eggplants are thermophilic, therefore it is necessary to transplant seedlings to a permanent place at a certain temperature of the soil and air. Knowing the characteristics of the culture, as well as the lunar sowing calendar and long-term weather forecast will help you navigate the planting dates in 2023.

What factors influence timing

The seedling method of growing a heat-loving crop guarantees a crop on time, allows the fruits to ripen in the unstable climate of the northern and middle latitudes. The choice of dates is influenced by weather conditions, the place of cultivation (greenhouse, closed garden), the duration of the growing season of seedlings, favorable time according to the lunar calendar.

If you are late with sowing, then the seedlings will have to be transplanted to a permanent place later and the fruits may not ripen. With early sowing, the plants are stretched, grow weak, which significantly increases the period of adaptation and, as a result, the fruits ripen late.

Vegetation period, variety

Biologic althe features of eggplant are in many ways similar to bell peppers - the seeds germinate for a long time, the seedling grows slowly up to two true leaves. The seedling is ready for planting in the ground with 6-7 true leaves, the stem has grown to 25 cm. 90 days.

Growth periods:

    • germination - 3-4 days;
    • without soaking the seeds sprout 7-10 days, with sprouts - 4-5 days;
    • adaptation after dive - ≈10 days;
    • seedlings of early varieties are ready for transplanting in 60-65 days, mid-season - 65-70, late-ripening - 70-90.

    The duration of this or that period depends on the use of growth stimulants, soil quality, fertilizers, daylight hours.

    An example of calculating the sowing date: from the approximate date of planting in the ground or greenhouse, subtract the period of seedling growth, depending on the variety.

    To navigate the time of eggplant sowing, you need to take into account the long-term weather forecast and climate features in a particular area. The average periods of heat establishment are approximately the same - they should be taken into account, making adjustments according to the forecasts.

    Estimated dates by region:

    • Moscow, Moscow region - from the third decade of February, the deadline is the first decade of March;
    • mid latitudes - late February-mid March;
    • areas of the Urals, Siberia - the first decade of March (in the northern regions it is recommended to plant only early varieties);
    • southernregions - can be sown immediately in a garden bed or in a greenhouse when constant heat is established, seedlings are sown in mid-late January.

    Conditions for transplanting into the ground: temperature during the day - 23-25 ° C, at night - 15 ° C. In the greenhouse, the soil warms up earlier, its own microclimate is created, so seedlings are planted two weeks earlier than on an open ridge. Accordingly, sowing is carried out earlier.

    Lunar calendar

    It is recommended to sow, plant, replant plants that form above-ground fruits on the growing moon, when liquid media rush upwards. The days of the full and new moon are considered unfavorable.

    Lunar calendar for planting eggplants for seedlings and greenhouses for 2023:

    MonthFavorable days for sowing, planting in a greenhouseUnfavorable days
    January1-6, 23-31 7, 21
    February1-4, 21-28 5, 20
    March1-6, 22- 317, 21
    April1-5, 21 -306, 20
    May1-4, 20-315, 19
    June1-3 , 19-304, 18

    If we take into account the biological characteristics of the crop and the lunar phases, the seedlings grow strong, require less fertilizer, and are highly resistant to diseases and pests.

    Preparation of seeds, soil

    Seeds purchased at the store have already been treated for pests and infections, and homemade ones are disinfected in a pink solution of potassium permanganate for20 minutes. To accelerate the germination of seeds, placing them in gauze, they are kept in hot (45-50 ° C) water for 5 minutes. After that, rinse with water.

    To speed up germination, you can use "Epin" in solution (cook according to the instructions), adding a little "Cytovit" microfertilizer. The exposure time in the solution is 15 minutes. After complete drying in the air, the seeds are kept indoors during the day, and put in the refrigerator at night. The hardening course lasts 5 days.

    The soil for seedlings should be loose, neutral in acidity. You can use purchased soil or prepare the soil mixture at home by mixing humus (2 parts), soddy soil and river sand (1 part each). The prepared soil is disinfected with a hot 1% solution of manganese or kept in an oven for half an hour at a temperature of 70 ° C. After that, be sure to fertilize with nitrophoska (40 g / 10 l) and ash (1 cup / 10 l). Ash serves as a source of organic substances, disinfects.

    Aktara, Fitosporin, Fundazol are suitable for disinfection.

    Sowing and care

    In order not to carry out a pick in the future, it is convenient to sow in individual containers, for example, in plastic glasses with a volume of 0.5 liters. They are filled with soil, leaving 1-1.5 cm to the edge, watered. When the water is absorbed, two seeds are placed in each, the embedment depth is 1 cm. Of the two sprouts, the stronger one is left, and the weak one is pulled out.

    For ease of transfer, the containers are placed in a tray, covered with foil and kept at 25-28°C. The film is regularly removed for ventilation. After 1-1.5 weeks, shoots will appear, and the shelter is alreadyno need. The pallet is transferred to a cooler place (24 ° C).

    Care steps:

    • backlighting, turning the cups towards the light from different sides;
    • regular watering with settled water at room temperature (the soil should be moist, not wet);
    • if there are 4 sheets, they are fed with Agricola, Athlete, Fertik Lux (recommended dosage is reduced by 2 times);
    • after 1.5 weeks they are fed a second time - chicken manure granules are mixed with water (1: 1.5), infused for 72 hours;
    • before transplantation (7 days in advance) feed with potassium s alt and superphosphate (15 g + 30 g/5 l).

    Special soil for eggplant seedlings does not need to be fertilized. Top dressing is applied to home-made soil.

    The correct time for planting eggplants for seedlings and in the greenhouse, the creation of the necessary conditions for development will be the key to a good harvest of "blue ones" in 2023. A nutritious and he althy vegetable can be consumed in the second half of summer, harvested for the winter.
