There are more than 1000 edible and ornamental plants in the genus Onion (Allium). Onions, shallots are grown on the head and feather, onions and leeks are grown on greens, varieties of slime are planted for use as food and as ornamental plants. Among the variety of food onions, the leading position is occupied by onions. First, sevok (small bulbs) are grown from seeds, and the next year, full-fledged large bulbs are obtained from them. Planting onions on greens is possible all year round, for heads it is planted in spring or autumn. When to plant and dig onions in 2023, the lunar calendar will tell.

Sevoc - planting dates

To get large heads, sevok is planted in spring or autumn - it all depends on the climate. Sowing or planting seedlings on greens in the open field, in a greenhouse is carried out in the spring, at home - all year round.

In the spring, they start planting when a stable positive daytime temperature is established, and the soil at a depth of 10-12 cm warms up to 11-13°C. In the southern regions, such conditions occur in March, in the regions of the middle zone - in late April-early May. Where the spring is protracted, the heat comes late, the dates fall on the third decade of May-beginning of June. If you land, without waiting for heat, in cold soil, then, hittingunder frost, seedlings will give an arrow.

According to popular belief, the time of planting onions coincides with the flowering period of bird cherry.

Autumn is also guided by the weather. If planted late, then the root system will not have time to form, early - the seedlings will freeze. The optimum temperature at night is -3 °С, during the day - up to +5 °С and more heat is not expected. Dates fall on October-beginning of November. It is difficult to guess under such conditions, so most gardeners prefer to plant onions in the spring.

When to sow seedlings

If you wish, you can get large heads in the same year - you need to grow seedlings. By autumn, the heads will ripen, and the harvest will be no worse than when grown from sets. With the seedling method, preference is given to sweet, semi-sweet and semi-sharp varieties.

The time for sowing is chosen in the third decade of February or the first half of March. Seedlings are grown in opaque boxes, containers with a height of at least 10 cm. The seeding depth is 1 cm. The box is kept under a film until germination.

Saplings are ready for transplanting to the ridge in 60 days. They should have strong roots, 3-4 true leaves 3-4 mm thick at the base. Young plants are not afraid of small frosts.

When to dig

To keep the onion better, dig it up at the stage of full maturity. The rate of ripening is influenced by varietal characteristics, weather, growing and care conditions.

Signs of ripeness:

    • tops become lethargic, yellow;
    • the neck becomes thinner, loses elasticity, feathers fall;
    • the control specimen has dried, shortened roots;
    • scales darken, peel off.

    If 70% of the area of the onion bed shows signs of ripening, then you can start harvesting.
