Earth Hour is an international event traditionally held in spring. In 2023, the action is scheduled for March 25, according to tradition, on the last Saturday of the month. In the period from 20:30 to 21:30, taking into account local time, voluntary participants of the action turn off the lights and electrical appliances as a sign of support for a reasonable attitude towards nature and its resources.

Promotion target

Earth Hour is not about saving electricity, as it might seem at first glance. The short gap is too small for significant energy savings on a global scale. Switching off symbolically expresses the unity of people in defense of nature.

The purpose of the event is to attract interest to the environmental problems of the planet, to express collective concern for the common future, to remind about the reasonable consumption of natural resources, which are not unlimited.

Participants of the event are both individuals and state, public, commercial enterprises. For an hour, residents turn off the lights in their apartments, organizations turn off the illumination of monuments, buildings, bridges.

Street lighting, continuous production will not be used in the action for safety reasons.

History

The idea of the action to cut off electricity appeared in the branch of the fund forWildlife Protection (WWF Australia). The initiators came forward in 2004 with a proposal to draw the attention of Australians to negative climate change. The developed concept was called "The Big Click".

The first action, held in 2005, involved over two million Sydney residents, 2100 organizations. The following year, the name was changed to shift the focus from a simple blackout to the global problems of the planet. Earth Hour received international status; in 2008, 35 countries of the world, more than four hundred cities, over one hundred million people joined the action. The environmental initiative was supported by residents of different countries, as climate change affected all peoples.

The Opera House in Sydney plunged into darkness for an hour, the illumination of the Californian Golden Gate Bridge, the building of the Roman Colosseum, Big Ben in London, the American skyscraper Willis Tower, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and other large objects did not burn.

Researchers found that as a result of the campaign, the interest of the planet's inhabitants in environmental issues increased by four percent.

The geography of the Earth Hour has expanded every year. Today, a mass action on the planet unites over two billion people from 180 countries.

The event is traditionally held on the last Saturday weekend in March. If the date of the promotion coincides with the calendar on Holy Saturday on the eve of Holy Easter, then the event is postponed a week earlier.

Earth Hour

In 2009, our country, with the support of the Ministry of Nature, joined theholding an international action. Twenty cities participated in the first year, in the subsequent period, the action captured a wave of hundreds of settlements from Kamchatka to Kaliningrad.

The country turned off the illumination of famous buildings, cultural monuments. The number of iconic objects left without lighting for an hour included:

    • The Hermitage in St. Petersburg;
    • Moscow Kremlin Ensemble;
    • Amusement park in Sochi.

    Active Internet users join the event by logging out of all social networks, turning off their computer, tablet, laptop for an hour. The civic stand of the participants is in a public call for decisive measures to limit human impact on the planet's ecosystems.

    The Earth Hour action was supported by the organization of an ecological flash mob installation in Khabarovsk, a night race with lanterns in Krasnoyarsk, a candlelight concert in Murmansk, and a bike race in Vladivostok.

    Idea development

    The Earth Hour logo reflected the number 60 until 2011. The World Wide Fund (WWF) added the sign "60+" to the image. Environmental support is needed not only to preserve energy resources, but also natural sources of water, air, and minerals.

    Conservation societies support initiatives for the mass use of LED lamps, saving clean water, packaging, recycling waste.

    Earth Hour is dedicated to a new topic each year, which is covered in the press, discussed at public and educational events. The action is actively supported by young people from different countries,who wonders what the future holds for her.

    One of the hot topics of recent years is the openness of environmental information, efficiency and accuracy. Currently, climate change, the problems of water and air pollution affect the quality of life of every person.
